Regarding shuttle costs, & low reliability, the two failures that occurred would have been avoided if proper attention to the hardware issues that arose over the program. Unfortunately , you will find these errors in most complex programs. Automating the shuttle , & adding crew escape pod as delineated on Nasaproblems.com site would significantly minimize crew risks.
Cost can be significantly reduced by following the steps delineated in nasaproblems.com.
The present SLS approach certainly will not reduce costs nor provided the STS for the next several decades.
